A Voice from Catland A collection of sheet music from the works of Louis Wain (possibly the first in a series highlighting details and other interesting things in his work.) I attempted a more legible transcrption for the ones I felt somewhat confident in being able to accurately notate. If you're interested, we have several hundred music-related pieces online at Catland, as well as over 5000 other pieces by Wain! Endless thanks to Keegan for making this possible. =^w^= While I don't believe any of these are particularly intentional (I don't recall Wain having much musical training, althrough he would improvise on piano at some social events,) it's interesting to at least call forth some faint melody from Catland itself. A distant echo, a torn piece of a photo, two water-damaged frames from a silent film. Reminds me of the Greek poems that only survive in three-word fragments. As is likely obvious, I have zero experience with musical notation, but hopefully the placement is at least accurate. If somebody who can play music wants to give these pieces a try, please send me recordings. For now, this is just a proof of concept; hopefully one day with Keegan's help we can put this back together a bit better. An EP or something based around these would be cool too.
(from Untitled)
(from The Piano Player)
(from Cat at a Piano) Since I believe we have this one in a book somewhere, we might be able to get a non-blurred photo soon!!
(from A Diary Of Happy Days and Years)
(from The Note Duly Reached)
(from Our Prima Donna)
(from Louis Wain's Annual 1914) (This one's basically just dadaist sheet music; conventionally unplayable, but certainly interesting given similar artistic movements that were prevalant at the time.)
____________________________________________________________ As always, Keegan and I are slowly but surely working on Catland - adding new photos, buying books to scan and make available as digitally-remastered PDFs (easily publically available for the first time in over a century!), and doing our best to create the best and most comprehensive database of all things Wain. Pay us a visit sometime!
