Depths of the Net

DEPTHS OF THE NET was a perpetual work-in-progress project
with the intention of posting obscure music every day from all over the musical
sphere that I encounter on my endless safari through the wide world of web,
for two years and counting!

If you own any of this and want me to change or remove it I gladly will,
and though might take me a while to get to them suggestions are also appreciated.

And now for something completely different!

It's a relief to see that the old-school soundcloud NXC

fact that nobody even knows who this person is doesn't hurt.
This is the mix that 2016 wishes it made, downright lost in time.

Crunkcore / breakcore / hyperpop-influenced pop punk about building
a cult. Exactly as silly and glorious as that description entails,
and quite more coherent than you might expect, plus the crucified
sparkledog is the cherry on top. Not sure if it's just my copy but
the version I ripped from soundcloud is haunted and makes lobit
glitchy howling noises for as long as I try to play it, presumably
forever, which is very on brand.

A tape collage with wide expanses of dead noise, no-fi warbled

warped effects, hard/jumpstyle music, unsettling early internet visuals,
layers and layers of SFX and tags, and an impenetrable atmosphere of nightmarish

I just want to take a moment to acknowledge the growing underground

music into a singular whole. There's more producers than I can even keep track
of who are releasing euphoric drone or original piano tracks right next to nightcored hip hop with
seemingly no distinction between the two, and the more I look the more I realize
how late I am since I'm only now discovering it and there's plenty who have taken
it to an art form already. I cannot believe I'm saying it but the future of internet

Sometimes I miss how in past decades some artists used elaborate packaging and
inconvenient formats to make their music almost interactive art, ranging from
unconventional bonus items or containers to straight up antireleases. Fortunately,
this trend has kinda continued to the internet era, and definitely extends beyond the
internet weirdo music usual suspects - this relatively established soundcloud artist
dropped an EP exclusively in China, presumably requiring fans to fake their settings or
register alt accounts to listen to it and reupload for others. It's strangely processed
and unusual in general, but the post-internet collage beauty of the cover is an adaquate
representation of it's contents. My faith in art still being alive is routinely restored
from angles I never expected.

Odd to think that for ever massive internet genre that everyone has heard of,

Genre: Bubblegum bass, jumpstyle

I can safely say that the entirety of hardcore electronic music
has been leading to this single song, which has rendered happy hardcore
and adjacent genres complete. Nothing else I have heard has compressed this
much joy into under 100 seconds, and also I wanna mention that while happy
music can be kinda goofy and not emotional, IMO in order for music to be
truly euphoric it has to be emotional, like it reaches into your heart,
pierces it with a fucking spear, and lifts it straight into highest heaven.
The emotion gets into your soul like a trojan horse before shedding it's bittersweet
skin and releasing pure bliss. This accomplishes that beautifully and
Hannah's vocals sound like a literal angel. CANNOT wait to play this live
and have everyone hate it. Yes, I'm aware I'm gonna be unbelievably sick of it

Not sure how everyone else's 2016-2018 period was (aka when this was recorded)
but I spent it goofing online and pretty happy and this feels just about like that.

Year: 2021
Label: Vivarium Recordings
Genre: Digital hardcore, sound collage

Alternate soundtrack to listening to footwork on your laptop and playing YTPs off your phone
while high out of your mind in a public place. For once this isn't based off of personal experience
but it still sounds pretty accurate. Big respect for making a 32 minute continuous track that goes
everywhere and keeps momentum as well as this does.

May 21st, 2023 - Public Realm Services - Private Urban 2017 Security Casual Rejection & Evan Lindorff-Ellery - Tape Collage Piece 2011
Year: 2017 & 2023
Label: A⊗B & Falt
Genre: Field recordings & musique concrete tape music sound collage yada yada

I was unsure if either of these deserved their own post, so they get to share.
One is a field recording from one of the first bandcamp pages I ever found and helped
open my eyes to the weirdness internet music could actually entail, the other is a curious
little collection of archival lofi tape debris. Sounds so separated from their source like
mirrors facing mirrors that all context is lost (really, does any of this sound like how it
felt to be there?) and it gets a new kind of intimacy. Neat.

May 20th, 2023 - Plastic Neesound - 侵入者
Year: 2023
Label: None
Genre: Internet field recordings

Since 2016, Plastic Neesound has been building a mixed reputation dumping album
after post-nightcore album, some simple speed-ups and some destructive sound
collages or brain-hurting plunderphonics. However, over the years they've become
increasingly comfortable with deviating from the formula and have started dropping
projects unrelated to nightcore entirely, of which this is the most significant
so far, more in line with deep internet found sound than anything that's come before.
Maybe it's less interesting if you haven't been a Neesound observer for years, but
even outside it's context it's a haunting collection of digital scraps and snippets,
all the ephemera of daily life run though computerized compression and forgotten again
and again. It's the equivalent of framing blurry photos taken from stranger's 2011 camera
rolls as an art exhibit, or better yet projecting them onto the wall to disappear moments later.
"Memories of people who the world forgot. I hope they're doing well." I do, too.

Rare I find something that totally baffles me but I was going through my 2018
bookmarks and somehow dredged this up. You gotta wonder where the artist is now,
seeing as we haven't heard anything since this bizarre debut demo of outsider something or other.
It's like bedroom pop made my someone who only heard secondhand descriptions of bedroom pop
through a game of telephone and decided to make some.

How TF didn't I post this yet wtf, I thought it would be like one of my first?
Silly internet music at it's finest, just look at that tumblr. I've been thinking
lately about post-irony and all that jazz and realized there's a huge difference
between post-irony and neo-sincerity, which is really just sincerity backed
by self-awareness. There's tons of people who accuse stuff like this, post-nxc,
even vaporwave of being (post)ironic when really it's the most wholehearted
sincere stuff out there, even if it has a little glitter sprinkled on top. The
ouroboros has eaten it's own tail and couldn't be happier. Party on, dudes.

I won't share too much as to avoid looking like a weirdo but
I'd highly suggest checking out doughy daniels (or at least
the parts of his online identity that haven't been long-deleted.
Seems to be a combination of creative genius, performance art, and
mental episodes but I don't want to seem like a gawking onlooker, the
guy is genuinely one of my favorite virtual presences and I wish him only the best.
This EP dropped a year before his rise to quasi-fame and when I spent
months looking for it I expected outsider music or rap, not back-to-back
bangers of self-described "sci-fi pop." Legendary in a better timeline.

I've definitely mentioned it before, but I have an undying love for the
weird NXC scene. Connected soundcloud accounts, nightcore uploads, high levels
of friendship and camaraderie, stock photos and other highly aestheticised visuals,
thrived between like 2015-2017 but definitely is still around to some degree
thanks in no small part to Pedicure Records <3 <3 ANYWAY this brings us to cutiecore,
one of the best releases from the scene, guaranteed to take your summer experience to

Gotta love it.

Tony Scott, Shinichi Yuize, & Hozan Yamamoto - Music for Zen Meditation and Other Joys

Not totally sure how much this is 60s record exoticism and how much actual
traditional music, probably a healthy dose of each. Regardless of how much
it mirrors actual Zen it's one of the earliest New Age releases ever, and is
very much in the spirit of new age as a whole - the musical and philosophical
elements are taken out of their original context and kind of rearranged, but
the spirit is there and as long as you're getting something out of it. We
all have our path to follow, no one way.

Snow days as a kid and memories stored on old reel to reels, shadows

friends in some eternal limbo somewhere. The song has ended but an echo will
forever remain.
