DEPTHS OF THE NET is an perpetual work-in-progress project
with the intention of posting obscure music every day from all over the musical
sphere that I encounter on my endless safari through the wide world of web,
for two years and counting!
If you own any of this and want me to change or remove it I gladly will,
and though might take me a while to get to them suggestions are also appreciated. And now for something completely different!
The hardest 11 minutes of your life, I swear. Perfect mix of melodies and
distorted bass for maximum wall-punching power. (I also highly recommend
his actual content (also, this is what Gibby is up to these days.))

September 23rd, 2022 - Junior War Year: 2013
Switching it up today with a movie instead of music. If you're stuck in all the wrong
hellsites you might've run into Ryan Trecartin's masterpiece I-Be Area of Death Grips
sampling fame (which I cannot recommend enough, fry your brain with this ASAP if you
haven't already.) A little bit of digging pulls up Junior War, which is a fucking insane
collage of footage shot at an unsupervised, out of control high school party circa 2000 featuring
unhinged teenage nonsense, vandalism, and police intervention. I don't know what he was going
for but he accidently made the greatest documentary / found footage film ever.

I have little experience with modern (t)rap but this combines all the trends I've seen

September 21st, 2022 - Edouard Leon Scott de Martinville Year: 1853 - 1860
Label: None lol
Genre: Spoken word, acapella, found sound
Before Edison, the phonograph, the music industry, and all other recorded sound comes
Leon Scott and a peculiar device called the phonautograph, which left markings visualizing
sound on blackened sheets of paper. It had no method for playback and the resulting waves
were supposed to be read like words, which proved unfeasible. 150 years later, researchers
managed to digitize it, in all it's garbled glory. It absolutely sounds like something from the 1850s,
but it's worth it at least to hear a one-second 1853 guitar solo, and I'd be lying if I said it
didn't have something deeply unsettling about it.

Label: [????]
Genre: Christian children's music, glitch
One of a small but growing canon of albums that only got attention due to someone
screwing up. What should be a Korean children's choir CD got mangled in the
digitalization process, rendering much of it into looped scraps and the result
at times is some of the best IDM I've found yet. The purely glitched-out tracks
have an innocent and calming but messed-up feel to them and listening to the album
as a whole is nerve-wracking since you never know when you're gonna get thrown
into the vortex.

Googlecore was microgenre spawned in the depths of the RYM forums when users discovered

It's very rare music strikes me as genuinely disturbing, especially without
resorting to Sotos-ish shock tactics, and I didn't expect it out of 天気予報
who I usually think of as very homey, comfy signalwave. This does the trick.
It's the soundtrack to some kind of half-remembered childhood nightmare without
any of the nostalgia that would imply but all of the surreal blurriness and
panic. I could just imagine someone running in fear from some unthinkable
vagueness, they pause, sensing something horribly wrong, turn around to behold

I'll confess I rolled my eyes when I first saw this since North Korean vaporwave

There goes those expectations, seeing as this is both some of the best slushwave

Genre: Vaporwave, experimental
It's rare I drop everything I'm doing and listen to a completely new album repeatedly
after hearing a few seconds of it, even rarer that it's mostly based on the same 2-verse

are. It's up there with the best of eccojams in turning throwaway lines from vaguelly-nostalgic

ambient section halway through.) Overall, one of my favorite plunderphonic finds lately.

Instant post-NXC classic, and that's ignoring it's absurd length and structure.
You can tell just by the tracklisting you're in for something special, and

explore more and more soundscapes until eventually there's a whole discography's
worth of experimentation hidden in there. It's existence is just too stupid to

The cover leaves a little bit of vagueness as to whether this is made from hydrophone
recordings taken in areas where zooplankton live or from microrecordings of zooplankton

one more reminder of the strange world we live in.

August 3rd, 2022 - Spirits - Coping Mechanisms Year: 2017
Label: Ecco Gang Records
Genre: Post-rock, emo (black metal?)
First-wave post-nightcore artists NEOCAFE and Proxy Hornet join forces to
make, of all things, original music combining post-rock, emo, and black metal.
The end result is way better than that description probably made it sound,
invoking hospital visits and yearning and much else.
Battle Lolis has been combining black metal melodies and structure, chiptune instruments,
and child soldier / military themes for a decade now. After years of private releases
and almost no online presence, they've decided to make their discography available with
a new series of albums that have perfected their craft. War-cry melodies full of frantic
energy and melancholy that ascends it's seemingly absurd basis and becomes more than
the sum of it's parts. Even if the titles and themes are offputting, I'd urge you to give this a shot
if you've enjoy black metal, chiptune, or epic melodies, it took me by surprise.

Noise has an unfair reputation as being chin-scratching modern art, when most of it's

crammed into a hotel bathroom, goofing off as someone plays the contact mic'd fish and

Hard to tell if this was originally made as an experiment or a joke, but either

July 21st, 2022 - Cat Tower - Her Majesty's Tower Year: 2020
Label: WereGnome Records
Genre: Dungeon synth
I can't help but think of dungeon synth now as similar to vaporwave a decade ago.
For better or worse, it got popular hype, causing an influx of new artists, new
individualistic subgenres popping up monthly, and in just the couple months that
comfy synth was out by the time of Cat Tower, it had already eaten it's own tail
and subverted its own subversions of dungeon synth cliches. Maybe I'm reading too
much into it. Anyway, Her Majesty's Tower is a quality volume of dark dungeon
synth, not unlike slow battle marches at times and ambient laments at others, presumably
told from the perspective of a grandiose cat overlooking her domestic kingdrom from
atop her tower. (It would be good stuff even without the cat themes.)

Genre: Neoclassical, dark ambient
On posts or lists about eccentric, prolific, or underground musicians, I've never seen Vziel

creating in the realm of lobit, ambient, experimental, HNW, and neoclassical, collecting a terrifying

I clicked exclusively for the cat and got a bizarre experience instead.
Bass-rumbling dark ambient, vaporwave, crunchy HNW, weird sci-fi sounding

June 27th, 2022 - Various - Chippin' Party! #01 Year: 2016
Label: ああ...翡翠茶漬け...
Genre: Chiptune, happy hardcore
Some happy chiptune to brighten your day with more than a little
happy hardcore mixed in. The different artists all have their own
style but all go toward a coherent euphoric vision.

Before settling into the looped Japanese CM computergaze style they've become known for,
Infinity Frequencies made more conventional vaporwave with RnB and pop samples.
Sunset Limited is some of the best vaporwave in it's style: chill, sultry, with a
barely perceptible tinge of uncanny valley offness to it.

June 25th, 2022 - Sunset9 - Abandon In Peace Year: 2001?
Label: None
Genre: Rock
Surfed a couple thrift stores and brought this home, surprisingly good local rock. Seemingly
still active from 2000 until now, but this is the only release of theirs I know of, and had
no online presence until now. Behind the MS Paint cover lies a band that draws a number of
influences from classic rock and wouldn't sound very out of place on the radio. Cool stuff.

June 25th, 2022 - Voyager Golden Record Year: 1977
Label: NASA?
Possibly the most famous record (and eventually, probably the only record) in existence,
it's good to be informed of just what messages we're throwing out into the void. As illuminating
as it would no doubt be for other civilizations, it's equally interesting to see our own world
from as close to an outside view as possible. Essentially a sampler for our entire species.
This isn't an actual album, but a collection of my digital archeology efforts on this
project. A playful noise / experimental duo active from 2001-2004, their remaining
presence is understandable scattered. This consists of youtube finds, various images, and
mp3s from their dead site. Musically, it's a bit of old-school noise,
pseudo-industial songs, and silly experiments.

June 23rd, 2022 - -_- - schh766Hb_lol Year: 2019
Label: 7FORM
Genre: Experimental, field recordings
If I recall correctly, this was based entirely around the screenshot that was used as
the cover. It's a very unique compilation of various artists interpretations of online
calls and interaction. There's deep interet style youtube collages, extreme lofi
field recordings, random spoken word, and others. A lot of 7FORM is only superficially strange
but this is a different beast. For fans of pure internet music.

Label: Mycophile Records
Genre: Sonification?
We all want to escape our stressful human lives sometimes, so why not give up for
a little while and enjoy being a plant instead? One Hour As Peyote is about as close
as you can get, being made of edited bioelectrical recordings of it's titular flora.
Sounds a bit like abstract ambient glitch music being played from underwater. Oddly comfy.

June 21st, 2022 - Vzaéurvbtre - Urvdrèm Uatrè Uètre Year: 1995
Label: None
Genre: Dark ambient
You can find far more information on them elsewhere, but in short, Les Légions Noires
was a circle of avant garde black metal musicians from France who did as much as possible
to maintain their secrecy while building a wall of rumors and whispers about them. Despite
their tapes extreme rarity, rips have been popping up sporadically since; this one lacks
accompanying cover art, as far as I can tell. It's a lofi mess of lamentful moaning and
screaming backed only by an equally lamentful and dissonant violin. Rides the line of dark
absurdity and genuine eerieness.

June 17th, 2022 - Mr. Brain Sander - Craigslist Year: 2008
Label: Anti-Everything
Genre: Noise, spoken word, experimental
I don't like this release but I can't disregard it. It's a collection
of sexual spam and trash from Craigslist, spit out rapid-fire with breakcore
and noise backing - essentially a reflection of the comically trashiest facet of the
internet and humanity. Nowhere near as objectively disturbing as most power
electronics classics but there's an additional layer of strangeness, seeing
that the artist is known for "stand up tragedy" performance art, daily self-portraits,
and drug experimentation. Probably don't open that link at work.

Label: None
Genre: Psychadelic rock
Stumbled across the cover looking for cat pictures, thought it would be some /mu/
meme gusic album, turns out it's a criminally underated psychadelic rock venture
that's alternately dramatic, euphoric, and apocalyptic. It sounds almost timeless
and features seriously vivid and surreal songwriting. Absolutely give it a shot if
you like rock music or if the word art rainbow cat draws you in too.

Label: TKKNT Tapes
Genre: Memphis rap
I don't understand a word and can't find translations but it hooked me immediately.
Some tracks have a more standard hip hop sound, many are darker and reminiscent
of witch house, even featuring an excellently-used Burzum sample. As cold and isolated
as the cover would suggest.

June 17th, 2022, Part II - 100 smears - 1000 smears Year: 2020
Label: ABSOLUTE TRASH MEDIA
Genre: (Hyper)pop smears
I would feel stupid if I have this a day of it's own but it was genuinely
interesting enough to warrant some mention. 1000 gecs, by now as familiar
as the back of your own hand to anyone in the meme mashup hellworld that
is ATM and similar labels, is compressed and expanded into an ambient
rework, seemingly inspired by Buttress O'Kneel's "pop smears" genre. Despite being a blatant shitpost, it's worthwhile for anyone who liked
the original or otherwise knows it too well.

Everyone knows Eccojams but adjacent to it ran a lesser known project pushing Chuck Person's
nostalgic plunderphonics in a more fragemented dimension. Everyone who makes a big deal out of
▣世界から解放され▣ as the "end of vaporwave" need to listen to this and realize that vaporwave
began as a deconstructed mess. Snippets of Eccojams, commercials used in Replica, along with myriad
other pieces of pop culture debris and detritus is swept up and compacted into a nonstop sound
collage that presents the leftover shards of decades of forgotten media. If that's too pretentious,
it also kind of sounds like if your remote's channel-switch button got stuck down.

June 16th, 2022 - Rutherford Chang - We Buy White Albums Year: 2013
Label: None
Genre: Experimental rock, classic rock
This has to be one of the most creative plunderphonics(?) / cultural
recyling projects I've ever seen and you'll understand it the second you
look at the cover. Using the White Album as a literal blank slate, it collects
hundreds of copy's decades of debris and personal history, both visually
and audibly. All while the original remains recognizable, the slight flaws in
it's physical iterations increasibly build until it becomes a warped noisy mess
in the most fascinating way possible.

Somewhere near the Russia / China border, Jan visited an abandoned cement factory

it's almost subaudible vibrations. The result's some frigid dark ambient.
Not entirely unlike howling wind from inside a cave or cosmic background noise.

June 12th, 2022 - Zazier - TARGETED INDIVIDUAL Year: 2020
Label: None
Genre: Ambient pop, hip hop
Zazier tends to make music themed on the sketchy borders of erratic behavior and
technology misuse. (My favorite release of his until now was this now-deleted bonus
media collection with DATAPANIC.) Moving beyond CCTV-induced paranoia, this album
explores the nightmare reality of TIs through a blend of instrumental hip-hop,
ambient pop, vaporwave influence, and downtempo.

One of the most unique takes on HNW to come up in a long time. In a genre

I already posted Saito Koji a while back but it feels wrong not to put this

Very simple, 40 minutes of the same guitar chords soaked in reverb, but it
summons the most peaceful imagery for me, like being told things will be fine
