Depths of the Net

DEPTHS OF THE NET is an perpetual work-in-progress project
with the intention of posting obscure music every day from all over the musical
sphere that I encounter on my endless safari through the wide world of web,
for two years and counting!

If you own any of this and want me to change or remove it I gladly will,
and though might take me a while to get to them suggestions are also appreciated.

And now for something completely different!

September 29th, 2021 - punpun - ゆういち
Year: 2020
Label: 7FORM
Genre: Guitar ambient

And my attempt at this page being varied goes clear out the damn window because this
is basically a less structured hana sumai. Whatever! An Oyasumi Punpun project is good enough
for me and the seemingly random but pleasing guitar strummings, meandering and building into noise,
is pretty faithful to the spirit of the work it's based on.

Year: 2016
Label: None
Genre: Ambient

Maybe this isn't super obscure but it deserves far more recognition than it recieved. It's
as beautiful as ambient music gets while using a different instrument from most, looping guitar
melodies that drift through their own world at their own pace. It is as melancholy as the title
suggests but also just as peaceful. It's like accepting what's going on and not really fighting
it anymore.

I have too much serious stuff on here so time for something on the opposite side of things.
This is a silly album of mashups that blends 37 tracks (from Hatsune Miku, Aphex Twin, Kanye,
Car Seat Headrest, and more) into a breakbeat infested mess I enjoyed greatly. (I don't know
most of the tracks to be honest, but "im sad lol" more than makes up for it. Check it out, even

Sentimental anisong (with pop and other samples mixed in every now and again,) breaks and kicks,
feelsy overtones, what's not to love? Even if it's kind of by-the-numbers lolicore, not

Too many things here are recent so here's some old-school net music from a pre-Bandcamp era. Chiptune fit for

Neat melodies and interesting sounds in a byte-sized package. Sorry. I wonder where Irrlicht Project is these days.

Year: 2011
Label: None
Genre: Chipnoise

As far as I know "chipnoise" isn't really a full-on genre / scene, but despite that, 258 artists turned up to
come up with their takes on what it would be. The result is a great variety of bitcrushed grindcore, chiptune
microtracks, glitching, and all sorts of wild experimentation. It bears some similarity to the one second

distinct.

Genre: Outsider emo

Excessive autotune has become something of a novelty (then a cliche) in underground net music
as of late, but here's an example from before it was cool. It honestly could've been released
today and I'd believe it. Acoustic tweemo, keyboard ambient, and other somewhat silly but sweet
stuff makes up it's backbone, and it could probably stand as is without the vocal stuff, even
more interesting that it was made in a day. Basically the My Teenage Dream Ended of lofi bedroom
pop whatever.

Pacific Purgatory has a decent number of listeners, but the fact this album has three

almost-punk garage rock, pure piano pieces, and a more chill track that almost call up
images of a 21st century Beach Boys. I could go one and on but I won't and will just

Genre: Outsider emo

There's something about going through long abandoned channels and accounts
still littered with sincere remnants of bygone phases, isolated but accompanied.
This reads like shitty poetry, I'm so sorry. Point is, this release is the
audio equivalent of that: eleven different takes of an emo song, put online
with likely very little audience or attention. The styles are very different:
heavy autotune use, lofi accapella, and much more. It's very far away but still
very personal.

Beautiful hazy piano melodies that are just as cold, isolated, but nostalgia drenched

I could go on and on about 800mg and associated aliases but this is probably as good
an introductory album as ever. Loving and hopeful trance songs are given a treatment
of distortion and run through some glitches, amens, and kicks that are less intense

"Distorted guitar recorded on a toaster" is a whole subgenre of post on this page at this point,
as is calling myself a broken record, but I've come up from the depths of my bandcamp archives with
hopefully another gem in the rough. Relationships and angst are replaced with more abstract ruminations
on friends, drugs, and the omnipresent ambiguous "you," viewed through as warped and blurry a lens
as it's microphone. I think the lines "i can't leave your tv / i wish we could go out / but i don't

"Personal heart-bared teenaged lofi rock" is an idea I've rambled about too many times

impressive and quite good but Suicide Pact is phenomenal and pushed me to post this here. The

"Sped up songs with drum breaks" is an old and overused concept (one I'm more than guilty of) but
every so often a release following that formula shows up that feels different. "Cum mountain," despite
the title (which was originally "fuck sewerslvt") did that. It's obviously rough around the edges and

Distortion is so often used as a method of conveying edginess, harshness, and whatnot that artists sometimes overlook

Genre: Bedroom pop, outsider

I listened to this a bunch in 2018 and it helped to inspire some of my own projects (which
this site bears the name of) so it's high time I pay tribute to it. It's true amateur DIY
music made in some kid's bedroom on a keyboard but endearing despite or because of that. It's
as open and angsty as it gets, and the last track is really something else, far more haunting
than the sum of it's parts would suggest. The painful sincerity of the cover is a good summary
of it's contents. (Also, I sampled them once and they emailed me and I never responded because

Genre: Vaporwave, experimental

Vaporwave is completely oversatured and was by 2017, but Phonograph cylinder does a lot
unique with the genre and brings back the actual innovation that made it what it was in
it's earliest days. Every track feels completely different but bound into an abstract whole.
There's lounge music that's slightly off, reversed instrumentals, an eerie lofi plunderphonics
take from the first days of electronic music, and 나는 컴퓨터가 내 일을 할 수 있다고 믿는다 [takeover initiative] is
just magical (it samples The Beach Boys, which is cool too.) Despite being one of PC (later .tif, later

September 2nd, 2021 - Pochonbo Electronic Ensemble - Vol. 11
Year: Around 2003
Label: KMC
Genre: Pop

Maybe it's a bit of a lie to call this obscure considering there's a whole country that listens to it,
but few enough outside people know of it to justify it's inclusion here. Of the copious amounts of propagana
North Korea generates, it's music is some of the most interesting - stuck in past decades with the rest of
the country, but surprisingly good, with a distinctive sound that I can probably compare to being midway
between a national anthem and 80s pop, or one of those genres trying to cover the other, but that doesn't
really do it justice. If not for the titles, you could easily lose yourself in it and forget it's origin.

Wish I could provide more context with this, but I found it on Soulseek when looking for Insect

the board from tape-wobbling musique concrete to improvised mixes of all sorts of music. It also
sometimes provides intros or outros to get to know the people behind the setup. It's unpolished

Almost a year ago I heard about a scare about Mediafire deleting old inactive accounts. I'm unsure of it's reality

a few unique releases (stuff from every country, including North Korea, unreleased demos from garagebands, and the like)
but some stood out because their origin / artist was completely unknown. Some, like this one, lacked even a title or tracklist.
Dubbed "Mountains Tape" by the anon that ripped it, beyond it's backstory or lack thereof, it's a nice piece of ambient / new
age on side A, and an echoing alien wall of experimental electronics on side B. Backed by the tape hiss, I can imagine it as
the soundtrack to a mountain voyage on a strange old animation.

Guns for Losers seems lost in time. Movie samples merge with lofi guitar rock and vaguelly emo lyrics into

In many ways it reminds me of teen suicide - the edgy themes, foggy instrumenals, and genuine emotions played

Another band spearheaded by Adam Cooley of the former Ranger Raccoon entry, Ruinhorse
is an early 00s teenage punk band. When I think of them I think abstract bizarro lyrics,
video game references, the occassionally electronic hardcore kick, and all sorts of fun
small town punk nerdy weirdness. Thankfully, unlike so many of his other projects, Ruinhorse's site
is still online (and it's a nice artifact of the early internet to boot,) so you can read all
the lyrics and other information you want. Some of it is outsider and some of it
is pretty catchy. (I will defeat the creature, meltdown meltdown meltdowm meltdown!)

Genre: Ambient

As calm and cold as the cover suggests, this is another gem found laying
in the endless sea of Bandcamp. As far as ambient and drone goes it may
not venture far beyond the standard forumula, but it's a sweet release
nevertheless and one that accompanied me through a rough winter. It varies
between frigid (or warm, depending on how you see it) drones and beautiful
ambient chiptune, which seemed unique and special, not often you see that
done as minimally but effectively as here. Not quite happy but has a sense
of innocence.

Year: 2021

Genre: Post-punk

As far as I'm aware, this Russian project materialized on the Bandcamp
community one day, with seemingly no audience or attention (like so many
others) but it struck me as very special. I normally have little to no interest
in this genre but this stuck right away and hasn't worn off. It's an EP of melancholy
post-rock / post-punk, heavily tinged with (as I see it) teenage angst and peaceful
hopelessness. As always, it's subjective and you're welcome to find whatever feelings
and images you want in it, but I can't help but imagine it soundtracking a
life in a cold Khrushchyovka building and routines interrupted only by going on
aimless night walks.

Year: 2008
Label: Excite Bike
Genre: Experimental, noise

I've wanted to include more 00s DIY label stuff, and what's a better example than
Excite Bike? It has a vey distinct aesthetic (forgive me calling it that,) of warped
alien noise releases and collaged, psychadelic covers. It also dabbled in large
multimedia box sets (Sometimes They Come Back might be a better example) and Microelectronix
originally came as three cassettes. All in all, it sounds just like it looks: lofi, somewhat
trippy, somewhat nightmarish, simultanously atmospheric but still distinctively noise. Some
no-budget sci-fi horror movie would do well to use this as a soundtrack.

Genre: Breakcore / lolicore

(Apologies for the somewhat repetive entries, I've been on something
of a depressive breakcore kick recently. Will vary more soon.) After
a period of absence, this XoArK alias returned with my favorite work
of theirs yet. Emotional, bittersweet anisong meets break chopping the
likes of CDR, letting the sample's subtleties shine through while
emphasising and accenting them wonderfully. It also features two ambient
breakcore tracks, which are pretty in a completely different way. Feels
like a goodbye filled with mixed hopeful and tearful feelings.

If you don't know, mhzesent is one of the most bizarrely prolific artists of our time,
with an intimidating number of releases and a wall of aliases under his belt over the

an odd melted mixture of nightcore, vaporwave, lobit, hiphop, and assorted plunderphonics

tons of random bonus items consisting of text files, discord screenshots, video game screenshots,
videos of random stuff in his life, selfies, and whatnot.)

Label: Circular읏
Genre: Rock, new wave(?)

The ability for the internet to archive and share what would otherwise be lost or wasting away on
a drive or in a drawer somewhere is one of it's greatest strengths (and basically the point of this site.)
Nowhere is this more clear than on albums like this, found on a tape somewhere and digitized for a whole
new virtual audience decades after it appeared and disappeared in it's original scene. This particular
one is by a (presumably) local 80s rock band, unearthed and archived by a friend of mine. Reminds me of
The Cure in some ways.

Waqs / DJ Sailor Moon / i want to be dead is not really obscure within the world of breakcore /
lolicore, but he has probably dozens of side aliases which naturally don't get the attention
they deserve in the midst of his prolific output. "look at the sunset and cry..." is one of them
and might be more approachable for people new to Waqs, trading out blasting breakcore and anime
samples for more relaxed (but still well-chopped) breakbeats, vocals that wouldn't sound out
of place in a trance song, and classical instrumentals. The first two tracks are more vocals-based
and vary in style, and the last two are instrumental but just as good.

There's a lot of comparisons to be drawn here (forgive my pretentious namedropping):
chopped-up classical turned breakcore like Rossz Csillag Alatt Született, splintered
anime samples merged with hardcore like Lolishit, downbeat melancholy like Waqs and
waiting to die. Ultimately, though, it's a separate thing entirely. There's flashes
of hope, stretches of sadness, and it all goes on in a shut-in circle. (The allusions
to Kowloon Walled City and Serial Experiments Lain harken back to a specific time in
my life so it hits me a bit harder then it might affect others, but give it a shot anyway.)

Vaporwave is such an oversaturated genre that a release has to really be special

much. mew, however, stuck in my mind for a long time and I've been returning to
レイニン< every so often for a couple years. It sounds like what 2814 should have
been - the perfect mixture of soft droning ambience, beautiful piano, field recordings,

An underrated and mysterious artifact from early dungeon synth, Black Wailing seemingly

from Greece, they combine classic depressive melodies and dark atmosphere with lofi
black metal (sort of spoken word) vocals echoing over the whole thing. Separated from the

Label: Popsakal Records
Genre: Russian Shit Rap

Shit rap is a strange genre seemingly comprised almost exclusively of Russian teenagers
and sketchy netlabels, which is probably enough to tell you if you'd love it or hate it.
Despite the persistent themes of outsider-ness and low production quality, there's lots
of different takes on the style that emerged (which I suggest you explore in more depth

table-slapping percussion. Расчленённая ПугачОва has the added infamy under their belt
of consisting of two teens who actually killed people (the Academy maniacs,) but in the
aftermath of the crimes their grindcore got the most attention and not their hip hop
attempts.

Adam Cooley was a musician of many talents and many, many names, but Ranger Raccoon
is the one that stuck with me the most. Made as a young teenager and first emerging
on the long-since-deleted mp3.com, it combines sped up video game samples, absurdist
lyrics (if you can make any out,) screaming, crazy synths, and began to lay the groundwork
for the digigrind scene that would emerge in the next decade and still echoes today. Ironically,
this early artifact is one of (my subjective) best releases of the genre, combining silly but
cool tracks like "Pyramid of Pillow Fights" and surprisingly emotional songs like "Pink Tuxedo,"
and a lot of everything inbetween.

(This has more streams than anything else I posted but it's still incredibly unlikely anyone reading this has heard

essentially the same instrumental and vocals (in that way, similar to the sky 空 release I posted) but it
doesn't need to be any more than that because it's such a beautiful piece and doesn't feel repetitive in the

This artist is best known for his trolling / over-the-top edgy noise / grindcore / shitcore but he's capable of
more than that, as is demonstrated here. The first side is a combination of harsh noise and possibly original classical

Genre: Vaporwave, plunderphonics

If you know chris†††, you know it's entirely possible to make something genuine out of memes and other digital flotsam and this

online mess. Musically, this comes across as sound collage / vaporwave, some ambient portions, and even breakbeat tracks.
I'm not gonna ramble on like I did on past days but there's a good chance this is up your alley if you're into experimental

(I promise this is the last 2047 side project I post here ever, so sorry for repeating myself but there's just a lot of good
stuff buried in their disccography that I want to get out of my head before moving on.) On the surface, STARGIRL can be
called kind of lazy, basically just slowing down and distorting songs (mostly Porter Robison,) but maybe it's just me but there's
so much more that simple change does. The same way Chuck Person and other early vaporwave artists used minimal editing for maximum
effect, !!自己死 !!!takes sweet electronic songs and blasts them into brickwalled distortion that makes them feel orders
of magnitude more crushing and defeated. There's a bittersweet (probably the best word to describe the project) feeling of
of nostalgia and emotional overload that's hard to find much of anywhere else in this style. (STARGIRL also helped to change the way
I looked at noise, plunderphonics, and my own production.)

And now for something completely different!
I have a thing for footage of 2000s parties, experimental music by kids / teens, and weird early interet shit and I'm happy
to bring in all three in one. Hara Kari Kitty is an amateur, silly, passionate mess of video game sounds, chiptunes, blasting
gabber kicks, and crazy screaming. While this might sound familiar to people into cybergrind, HKK has a very unique way
of doing it, and was one of, if not the, first. In the early days it seems to just have been Brokecore, Adam Cooley, HKK,
Bubblegum Octopus, and one or two others that formed an incredibly internet-based, nerdy, and idiosyncratic sound. Just
look at the cover - it's a proto-lolcat circa '04, and there's some excellent footage of his shows. I wonder what HKK's up

Another one of Lyndon (暗い自然)'s project, sky 空 combined looping, drony pieces that could go on for an hour
or more with shorter tracks with more vaporwave-ish melodies. countryside 田 is neither, really - a windchime
orbiting around about the same melody for 20 minutes. It sounds minimalistic and could be boring in the wrong hands but
here it's perfect. It just sounds so absolutely pure and pretty that it can't really have anything to do with real
life. It's an ideal soundtrack for idealistic daydreaming, preferable at unhealthily high altitudes (laying face down

BANNED FROM LOLICORE is a fun little collection of hardcore / speedcore tunes with an interesting variety of how

This release is 750 kilobytes (I have text files bigger than that) but the lobit, 8kbps nature of it doesn't
hold it back, nor does the fact it kind of looks like a joke. It's one of my favorite ambient albums -
just conjures up images of computers running in some frozen bunker somewhere, endless snowstorms, and
an aimless existence hiding alone from a nuclear winter, without the overt edginess and cliches of dark
ambient (which this isn't.) Maybe I'm reading too much into it considering it's actually themed around
Osaka but it's very evocative and enjoyable ambient nevertheless. "untitled 1" is my personal favorite,

I knew I wanted to do Favorite 水 but didn't know which I wanted to include, but upon relistening to
the Tina Dartrix side I realized this was the one. Post-nightcore is a weird genre plagued by memeiness
and inaccessibility but this split really captures it's potential. Favorite 水 provides tracks whose
samples have no business being given the nightcore treatment (4 and 6) and a more conventional but absurdly
happy and catchy track (5,) and Tina's side is sleepy, vague, and hypnogogic. Weird that a nightcore artist
would capture what most vaporwave artists chase but never really achieve. My favorite is the aptly titled

Genre: Ambient, deathdream

I argued with myself a bit about what to put for today because I had so many ideas, but there'll be time enough
for them all eventually, so I settled on an extremely underrated ambient release. Spawned from the prolific
2047 부드러운 아픈 and microgenre deathdream (a subset of ambient vaporwave, it seems,) it was nuked with most
of their discography following a copyright controversy. I might post more rarer releases from Lyndon because
they have a beautiful balance of melody and ambient drone. The songs definitely move but at a glacial pace,
a balance most ambient music misses. 氷床 Earth sounds exactly how it looks - cold, blurry, weary, a soundtrack
to a lonely life in a nuclear winter. It feels like living and dying in Siberia or a shut-in slowly giving up
hope. I listened to it for days on loop when I was sick and reading Girl's Last Tour.

I have mixed feelings about the weird scene stuff emerging from Soundcloud but this is some of the best that

yourself set to fantastic high energy lofi punk guitar instrumentals. There's some acoustic songs, some really
short high octane songs, some instrumentals, and whatnot. He was also kind enough to put lyrics with it too, a
welcome change from the normally unclear lyrics in that genre. It begins with a sample from a school shooter
interrogation, which just about sets the stage for what's to come.

like the most extreme of Hikaru's kusoikore experiments without their "conventional" basis. The Ninja McTits side
really shines in my opinion and is the biggest influence on my noise music experiments. It's smashed together samples
from god knows where - OSTs, rock, breakcore, shards of McTit's music library - pasted together with noise blasts and
saved at +30 decibels or something. It's all jump cuts and sudden changes and I would love to see a sample listing for
