Alongside the 2012 vaporwave boom, a small group of /mu/tants had slightly differing ideas.
Instead of basking in the comforting glow of television ads, artists in the metro-ko scene turned it off and went
outside to wander the grey cityscape itself. In the words of someone I'm shamelessly plagiarizing, "If vaporwave
was the bright distraction on TV, Metro-ko was the bleak room housing the television set." Combining imagery of
North Korean propaganda stations, Kowloon Walled City's transcenent claustrophobia, and lonely electronic genres,
Juche dropped one album before the scene evaporated into the city fog as fast as it began.

vibe that goes perfectly with it's story. If I had to drive between isolated buildings in the small hours alone,

I was hesitant to post this for a while since it's obviously beyond edginess and probably
got me bumped up a row on a couple watchlists, but this album took me from "meh" toward PE
to rather blown away. Terror Cell Unit isn't fucking around with wandering noise filler:
these are genuinely structured songs, and even if I don't know if the message is condemnatory or genuine,
it's power comes through in all the horror and sick glory of a one-man apocalypse.

Simultaneously euphoric and strained and bursting at the seams with it's own energy, an accomplishment considering
it isn't fast or manic.

A couple days ago I shared a sonification album derived from the human genome. Interesting as it was,
it sounded pretty much like the raw data it was, and probably didn't fully show off the potential beauty
hidden in technical data. Enter TCLB. He's more known for his field recordings but before choosing that route,
he made four lovely sonification tracks that go more in an ambient direction, associating notes with numbers
and deriving odd and oddly soothing sounds out of tracklistings and weather datum. (This is not an official album:
track 4 is from a compilation and the other 3 are from an abandoned soundcloud and never saw a real release.)

hellsites you might've run into Ryan Trecartin's masterpiece I-Be Area of Death Grips
sampling fame (which I cannot recommend enough, fry your brain with this ASAP if you
haven't already.) A little bit of digging pulls up Junior War, which is a fucking insane
collage of footage shot at an unsupervised, out of control high school party circa 2000 featuring
unhinged teenage nonsense, vandalism, and police intervention. I don't know what he was going
for but he accidently made the greatest documentary / found footage film ever.

Before Edison, the phonograph, the music industry, and all other recorded sound comes
Leon Scott and a peculiar device called the phonautograph, which left markings visualizing
sound on blackened sheets of paper. It had no method for playback and the resulting waves
were supposed to be read like words, which proved unfeasible. 150 years later, researchers
managed to digitize it, in all it's garbled glory. It absolutely sounds like something from the 1850s,
but it's worth it at least to hear a one-second 1853 guitar solo, and I'd be lying if I said it
didn't have something deeply unsettling about it.

One of a small but growing canon of albums that only got attention due to someone
screwing up. What should be a Korean children's choir CD got mangled in the
digitalization process, rendering much of it into looped scraps and the result
at times is some of the best IDM I've found yet. The purely glitched-out tracks
have an innocent and calming but messed-up feel to them and listening to the album
as a whole is nerve-wracking since you never know when you're gonna get thrown
into the vortex.

some of the strangest fucking sounds I've found in a long time and a good reminder to

It's very rare music strikes me as genuinely disturbing, especially without
resorting to Sotos-ish shock tactics, and I didn't expect it out of 天気予報
who I usually think of as very homey, comfy signalwave. This does the trick.
It's the soundtrack to some kind of half-remembered childhood nightmare without
any of the nostalgia that would imply but all of the surreal blurriness and
panic. I could just imagine someone running in fear from some unthinkable
vagueness, they pause, sensing something horribly wrong, turn around to behold
this album cover, and this starts playing. Pure dread music.

I'll confess I rolled my eyes when I first saw this since North Korean vaporwave
has been explored several times before and IMO didn't succeed as more than a novelty.
There goes those expectations, seeing as this is both some of the best slushwave
and ambient I've heard in a while. 번영 is an etherial dreamlike blend of subtle motion
and unchanging drone, and my only complaint is that 태풍 is a fraction of the length it could be.
With any luck, 에큐메노폴리스 isn't someone's one off project and there's more to come.

it's hard to get more primitive than this and it genuinely evokes the esoteric ritual
atmosphere so much of the genre strives for. I'm actually hesitant to post it here since
it sincerely doesn't feel like something you should be telling people about, but I guess

entirely unlike the circumstances that led Judaswiege to record it.

covers, hint hint.)

are. It's up there with the best of eccojams in turning throwaway lines from vaguelly-nostalgic
pop songs into euphoric sea-of-sound mantras (also, definitely stick around for the gorgeous
ambient section halway through.) Overall, one of my favorite plunderphonic finds lately.

explore more and more soundscapes until eventually there's a whole discography's
worth of experimentation hidden in there. It's existence is just too stupid to

all good shows. The channel, Johnny Cash (better known as Breakdancing Ronald Reagan) is a
gold mine of shows like this.

albums (or make me do it if you want) in 8kbps, it's a great way to bring new
light to something you've heard a million times.

I can't help but think of dungeon synth now as similar to vaporwave a decade ago.
For better or worse, it got popular hype, causing an influx of new artists, new
individualistic subgenres popping up monthly, and in just the couple months that
comfy synth was out by the time of Cat Tower, it had already eaten it's own tail
and subverted its own subversions of dungeon synth cliches. Maybe I'm reading too
much into it. Anyway, Her Majesty's Tower is a quality volume of dark dungeon
synth, not unlike slow battle marches at times and ambient laments at others, presumably
told from the perspective of a grandiose cat overlooking her domestic kingdrom from
atop her tower. (It would be good stuff even without the cat themes.)

make an appearence, which should be criminal. They've been active for well over a decade, constantly
creating in the realm of lobit, ambient, experimental, HNW, and neoclassical, collecting a terrifying
array of aliases and spawning multiple labels along the way. I haven't gone too far into their sprawling
discography but this seems as good an into as any; strangely processed melancholic piano that embodies
a sense of distortion and isolation.

experience either way.

in favor of a soothing crackle. Like the best of walls, it's definitely a sound you
can get lost in, feels to me like listening to snow settle. Zen static.

You can find far more information on them elsewhere, but in short, Les Légions Noires
was a circle of avant garde black metal musicians from France who did as much as possible
to maintain their secrecy while building a wall of rumors and whispers about them. Despite
their tapes extreme rarity, rips have been popping up sporadically since; this one lacks
accompanying cover art, as far as I can tell. It's a lofi mess of lamentful moaning and
screaming backed only by an equally lamentful and dissonant violin. Rides the line of dark
absurdity and genuine eerieness.

I don't like this release but I can't disregard it. It's a collection
of sexual spam and trash from Craigslist, spit out rapid-fire with breakcore
and noise backing - essentially a reflection of the comically trashiest facet of the
internet and humanity. Nowhere near as objectively disturbing as most power
electronics classics but there's an additional layer of strangeness, seeing
that the artist is known for "stand up tragedy" performance art, daily self-portraits,
and drug experimentation. Probably don't open that link at work.

rework, seemingly inspired by Buttress O'Kneel's "pop smears" genre.
Despite being a blatant shitpost, it's worthwhile for anyone who liked
the original or otherwise knows it too well.

nostalgic plunderphonics in a more fragemented dimension. Everyone who makes a big deal out of
▣世界から解放され▣ as the "end of vaporwave" need to listen to this and realize that vaporwave
began as a deconstructed mess. Snippets of Eccojams, commercials used in Replica, along with myriad
other pieces of pop culture debris and detritus is swept up and compacted into a nonstop sound
collage that presents the leftover shards of decades of forgotten media. If that's too pretentious,
it also kind of sounds like if your remote's channel-switch button got stuck down.

look at the cover. Using the White Album as a literal blank slate, it collects

and audibly. All while the original remains recognizable, the slight flaws in
it's physical iterations increasibly build until it becomes a warped noisy mess
in the most fascinating way possible.

group like 聞く is cool. This one is wall-like in it's unchanging soundscape of electronic
birds (worth noting is that we have no idea who endless birds is, and this is their only

(I was split about posting this for fear of violating the lost-media
reputaton that's surrounded it (I had to message someone to even get a copy
of it) but I'll remove it at the artist's request.) More widely known as
Heaven's Emperor, Hyperbloom collages together samples from all over the internet
into bleak representations of isolation and terminal onlineness. I can't say
anything this person hasn't said better, basically. Hyperbloom
kicks it up a notch - if Heaven's Emperor is a downward spiral, Hyperbloom is
the crash landing. With samples from (presumably?) monologuing internet users,
a fighting couple, and a livestreamed suicide, it's not recommended for everyone
but does a masterful job of capturing mental rock bottom.

and this project is certainly in that style, but the idea of isolating

seems to be typical of the style: several second bursts of mostly accapella
noisecore with almost no instruments, recorded on a flipphone by the sounds of it.
