Depths of the Net

DEPTHS OF THE NET is an perpetual work-in-progress project
with the intention of posting obscure music every day from all over the musical
sphere that I encounter on my endless safari through the wide world of web,
for two years and counting!

If you own any of this and want me to change or remove it I gladly will,
and though might take me a while to get to them suggestions are also appreciated.

And now for something completely different!

December 31st, 2021
I was unsure what release to end the year with, so here's a type of
net-based music I very rarely hear discussed. Conventionally, antireleases
are physical releases that subvert the normal media format and are often
completely unplayable. There are many lists of these online. Some artists
have taken this into the digital realm, making releases you have to remove
ASCII art from the data to listen to
, encrypted albums no one can listen to,
and gigabyte-sized WAVs that exist only to waste your bandwidth.
I tried compiling as many as I could find here.
If you are aware of any more, please let me know.

December 30th, 2021 - The Draculas - Lies
Year: ????
Label: None?
Genre: Lofi, synthpop

James Ferraro is well known in his kind of music circles, but this track
somehow slipped through the cracks and languished in undeserved obscurity.
Seemingly dredged up (by a musician formerly posted on here) from a broken

Genre: Noise, experimental

Another artifact of mp3.com-era noise netlabels. Distortion, experimentation,
low audio quality, shoved through early 00s modems and almost lost to time.
Can't help but wonder where a lot of these guys are now.

Year: 2019

Genre: Samplecore, sound collage

The best thing I can compare it to is Japshitfun-esque samplecore stuff,
but far higher production quality. Hundreds of second-long samples crashing,
flickering by, occassionally shifting into a more coherent beat before returning
to the mashed-up mess. Cool stuff.

December 26th, 2021 - Lil Grind$aw - SUICIDE PART X: Gloom
Year: 2017
Label: None
Genre: HNW, ambient

Lil Grind$aw (this post refers more to the artist than the release itself,)
instead of making hour-long monoliths that sound more or less the same, has
shorter walls just long enough to get the point across, uses a lot more careful
sound designing, and oftentimes works in looping samples on top of the crackles
and rumbles. If you're good with the edgy subject matter, it's as good as an
introduction to the genre as you can get.

I am well aware this is a meme album but intentionally or not it came out pretty
interesting. Even with the same sample in every track but one, it manages to stay

Label: Kawaii☆Noizu
Genre: Classical, harsh noise wall

One of my favorite HNW records of all time, eschewing the genre's usual
gore / edginess as well as it's counterculture "happier" side (see Love
Katy and such projects) in favor of beautiful melancholic pianos dueting
with it's static monoliths. I heavily encourage you to read the description,
too. It really does feel like bleakness and repetition and peaceful hopelessness
under anime sakura.

Warped ultimate lofi emo music. Some parts are messed with and reversed,
others ascend into noise, and there's some very pretty acoustic melodies

A lovely, almost outsider bedroom pop release, going from acoustic guitar songs

Genre: Mutant punk

This is not the actual cover but I couldn't find one and I like this image

I highly encourage you to read more about mutant punk here, but
in short, it was a brief, out of control music / subculture scene in San Diego at the turn of the
millenium that merged (cyber)punk, electronics, and the concept of culture hurtling towards some
collapse that can't come soon enough. It sounds exactly like that, even in this early unpolished demo (sampled and
popularized by Nero's Day at Disneyland, which shared a member with Beautiful Mutants.) They formally
and almost respectfully declared literal war on God and associated deities, accusing Him of terrorism.

For some context: all of the artists here are the same person, most commonly called Pkthundaga.
From what I've been able to figure out, this was made with the assistance of his own homemade DAW

it sounds like someone's mp3 collection run through a digital shredder, and when it's not it's some

I cannot for the life of me choose a release to post in specific so enjoy the label in it's entirety.
Летпав has less to do with labels the way most people think of it and more to do with net art, ephemera,
in-jokes, and (sometimes literal) poles of musical inaccessibility. Inbetween normal noise / HNW / plunderphonics
albums, you've got Л0429 (the same 6 second track, over and over, for seeming the sole purpose of having
titles,) Л0050 (pictures of an unhinged sounding notebook,)
Л0450 (almost a gigabyte of pictures from a trip,) Л0077 (?????)
and any kind of strange spur of the moment experiment the circle of artists behind this mess decided on.
Moreover, it seems almost completely unknown outside it's participants.

Genre: Kusoikore

Quality may be greater then quantity but there's something to be said

Unlike his ambient and hiphop releases formerly posted here, this delves

Another release put here mostly to highlight the label / artist, not that there's anything wrong

This is the prime example: often massive albums, minimally edited (more of collected or catalogued than anything) of slice

Genre: Emo rap

I'm normally less than a fan of this kind of music but if any song does it well it's probably this one. The guitar instrumental is
lovely, it doesn't have any trap snares, and keeps the tempo down while still being rap. There's three vocal parts (although one's
probably from the sample) and the lyrics, while angsty, are put together enought to get away with it. Generally, it nails what's
good about emo rap while avoiding (at least what I think are) it's annoying aspects. Additionally, it seems pulp finish purged just
about his entire online presence in 2019, including this, and it feels odd that I might've been the only one listening to it for that long.

Since I was lucky enough to get a CD of theirs at an art show a few years back, I've been meaning

way Bandcamp ambient tends to copy off of itself, and so it ends up mixing occassional percussion, electronics,

Genre: Post-nightcore

Lot of posts here: post-rock, post-nightcore, and you can draw ties to vaporwave if
you wanted with the echoing used. Regardless, It's a great excellent example of using
avant-garde / unorthodox techniques to make something greater than the sum of it's parts.
Despite being essentially a sped up post-rock mixtape, it's very sentimental.

September 10th, 2021 - Recovering Hikikomori - 絶望
Year: 2016
Label: Tsundere Violence
Genre: Instrumental trap

Some of us feel like shit sometimes, some of us feel like shit most of the time, some people
don't really want to leave their room, some people just don't. Trap is a genre met with much
eye rolling (with good reason in many cases) but RxHx captures all these sentiments very well.
Drone metal, OSTs, Viper, Lapfox, and god knows what else, echoing and chopped over percussion,
do a far better job than they reasonably should at soundtracking thoughts of angsty isolation.

Year: 2018
Label: None
Genre: Lofi rock
Making up for September 5th.

"Personal heart-bared teenaged lofi rock" is an idea I've rambled about too many times
here and anything more on the topic will practically be redundant even if the music is anything
but, which is frustrating because Furry Loser deserves a special introduction. The whole EP is
impressive and quite good but Suicide Pact is phenomenal and pushed me to post this here. The
idea of escaping from reality via love is an endlessly fascinating one, and I guess that is the
most extreme form of it. Rambling aside, I can't tell anyone IRL about this artist because of the name.

Genre: Lolicore, breakcore

"Sped up songs with drum breaks" is an old and overused concept (one I'm more than guilty of) but
every so often a release following that formula shows up that feels different. "Cum mountain," despite
the title (which was originally "fuck sewerslvt") did that. It's obviously rough around the edges and
is allegedly witchlift's first experience in music, but works despite that. It's a cute little album
(with bonus tracks, including Temma and wawawa) and I hope and think it's the start of something greater.

Distortion is so often used as a method of conveying edginess, harshness, and whatnot that artists sometimes overlook
that noise can be sweet, too. Thankfully, waiz did not. Pretty ambient guitar melodies not unlike hana sumai
sound out from behind a wall of compression, and manages to sound sincere and affectionate, a bittersweetness
that I can best compare to 光の緒 of Kawaii Noizu

Year: 2018
Label: None
Genre: Bedroom pop, outsider

I listened to this a bunch in 2018 and it helped to inspire some of my own projects (which
this site bears the name of) so it's high time I pay tribute to it. It's true amateur DIY
music made in some kid's bedroom on a keyboard but endearing despite or because of that. It's
as open and angsty as it gets, and the last track is really something else, far more haunting
than the sum of it's parts would suggest. The painful sincerity of the cover is a good summary
of it's contents. (Also, I sampled them once and they emailed me and I never responded because
I got scared and regret it to this day. If they're reading this, thank you and I'm sorry I never
got back to you.)

Year: 2017
Label: None
Genre: Vaporwave, experimental

Vaporwave is completely oversatured and was by 2017, but Phonograph cylinder does a lot
unique with the genre and brings back the actual innovation that made it what it was in
it's earliest days. Every track feels completely different but bound into an abstract whole.
There's lounge music that's slightly off, reversed instrumentals, an eerie lofi plunderphonics
take from the first days of electronic music, and 나는 컴퓨터가 내 일을 할 수 있다고 믿는다 [takeover initiative] is
just magical (it samples The Beach Boys, which is cool too.) Despite being one of PC (later .tif, later
Eir Mazur) earliest works, it's surprisingly well-rounded and helps to remind me of the power of plunderphonics
and the world wide web.

September 2nd, 2021 - Pochonbo Electronic Ensemble - Vol. 11
Year: Around 2003
Label: KMC
Genre: Pop

Maybe it's a bit of a lie to call this obscure considering there's a whole country that listens to it,
but few enough outside people know of it to justify it's inclusion here. Of the copious amounts of propagana
North Korea generates, it's music is some of the most interesting - stuck in past decades with the rest of
the country, but surprisingly good, with a distinctive sound that I can probably compare to being midway
between a national anthem and 80s pop, or one of those genres trying to cover the other, but that doesn't
really do it justice. If not for the titles, you could easily lose yourself in it and forget it's origin.

Genre: Tape music

Wish I could provide more context with this, but I found it on Soulseek when looking for Insect
Deli tracks. It's a collection of sets from experimental hobbyist cassette jockeys that's all over
the board from tape-wobbling musique concrete to improvised mixes of all sorts of music. It also
sometimes provides intros or outros to get to know the people behind the setup. It's unpolished
but very unique and speaks to an early 00s scene of musicians whose remnants exist in recordings

I have a special place for heartfelt amateur music that's probably

ruminations on both normal and acoustic guitar. Also, I think I helped get an

While Crywank has become some degree of famous online, this side project of his didn't achieve nearly the same level of

Almost a year ago I heard about a scare about Mediafire deleting old inactive accounts. I'm unsure of it's reality

a few unique releases (stuff from every country, including North Korea, unreleased demos from garagebands, and the like)
but some stood out because their origin / artist was completely unknown. Some, like this one, lacked even a title or tracklist.
Dubbed "Mountains Tape" by the anon that ripped it, beyond it's backstory or lack thereof, it's a nice piece of ambient / new

the soundtrack to a mountain voyage on a strange old animation.

Guns for Losers seems lost in time. Movie samples merge with lofi guitar rock and vaguelly emo lyrics into

In many ways it reminds me of teen suicide - the edgy themes, foggy instrumenals, and genuine emotions played

The ability for the internet to archive and share what would otherwise be lost or wasting away on

Nowhere is this more clear than on albums like this, found on a tape somewhere and digitized for a whole

It's over two hours of captured soundscapes from Morocco in the early 2000s, containing music, field
recordings, and all kind of snippets of life. The audio quality is sometimes eerily lofi but
if anything it adds to the experience.

August 6th, 2021 - Расчленённая ПугачОва - Rap of Fuckinnefor
Year: 2010
Label: Popsakal Records
Genre: Russian Shit Rap

Shit rap is a strange genre seemingly comprised almost exclusively of Russian teenagers
and sketchy netlabels, which is probably enough to tell you if you'd love it or hate it.
Despite the persistent themes of outsider-ness and low production quality, there's lots
of different takes on the style that emerged (which I suggest you explore in more depth
here,) but this release uses improvised, sometimes lengthy, off-time freestyles and
table-slapping percussion. Расчленённая ПугачОва has the added infamy under their belt
of consisting of two teens who actually killed people (the Academy maniacs,) but in the
aftermath of the crimes their grindcore got the most attention and not their hip hop
attempts.

August 5th, 2021 - Ranger Raccoon - Blood Surf
Year: 1999?
Label: None?
Genre: Digigrind

Adam Cooley was a musician of many talents and many, many names, but Ranger Raccoon
is the one that stuck with me the most. Made as a young teenager and first emerging
on the long-since-deleted mp3.com, it combines sped up video game samples, absurdist
lyrics (if you can make any out,) screaming, crazy synths, and began to lay the groundwork
for the digigrind scene that would emerge in the next decade and still echoes today. Ironically,
this early artifact is one of (my subjective) best releases of the genre, combining silly but
cool tracks like "Pyramid of Pillow Fights" and surprisingly emotional songs like "Pink Tuxedo,"
and a lot of everything inbetween.
Download it here. (Note: this is not an official version or release of the album, but a
Youtube rip I separated into tracks in Audacity. It includes another album of his too
as a bonus for those interested enough.)

August 4th, 2021 - Vihart - Ephemera
Year: 2015
Label: None
Genre: Classical

(This has more streams than anything else I posted but it's still incredibly unlikely anyone reading this has heard
it so I'll make an exception.) Vihart is more widely known on Youtube than as a musician, but when I was going
through my old downloads from years ago I was pleasantly surprised to stumble across this. It's 16 minutes of
essentially the same instrumental and vocals (in that way, similar to the sky 空 release I posted) but it
doesn't need to be any more than that because it's such a beautiful piece and doesn't feel repetitive in the
least. I don't usually listen to female vocals or classical / piano music day-to-day but this has been creeping
into my listening more and more, for good reason.
Download it here. (or here, if you don't have a Soundcloud account - I added some metadata.)

August 3rd, 2021 - Suicide By Hanging / Vxbxdxdx - Split
Year: 2018
Genre: Noise, classical, ambient

This artist is best known for his trolling / over-the-top edgy noise / grindcore / shitcore but he's capable of
more than that, as is demonstrated here. The first side is a combination of harsh noise and possibly original classical
music, and the second (both being aliases of the same person) is a short but sweet depressive ambient track. I enjoy
seeing artists subver expectations and prove they can do more than their norm, especially normally offensive artists
producing something sincere. For more ambient like this I'd recommend Untitled (AZU031), for more classical noise AZU062,
and more depressive noise, LieFlower.

do two tomorrow to make up for it.)

August 1st, 2021 - Dilly - Dilly
Year: 2019
Label: None
Genre: Emo, folk

(Another furry cover but this won't become a trend, I promise.) Did some deep digging on bandcamp a while ago and found
this and I'm very glad I did. It's a short EP of amateur but sweet and feels-y emo tunes. It hits everything I like
about the genre - confessional / personal (if sometimes cryptic) lyrics, short tracks, wonderful bedroom-recorded guitar
sound, and a variety of styles in a little coherent bundle.
Download it here. (It's three dollars and while it's best
to support the artist, bandcamp-to-mp3 sites are available if you're unable.)

July 30th, 2021 - RAWINTHEVOID - Fur and Loathing
Year: 2021
Label: None
Genre: Vaporwave, plunderphonics

If you know chris†††, you know it's entirely possible to make something genuine out of memes and other digital flotsam and this
is another excellent example of that. Plunderphonics snippets, youtube videos, and other media scraps merge into an overly
online mess. Musically, this comes across as sound collage / vaporwave, some ambient portions, and even breakbeat tracks.
I'm not gonna ramble on like I did on past days but there's a good chance this is up your alley if you're into experimental
plunderphonics, chris†††, and internet art. If the furry theme is offputting, try lyfeless, but if you like it a bit too much
try On A Daily Basis, These Things Enter My Mind (which I would've put here for today if I wouldn't be endlessly mocked by
my friends for the cover art.)
Download it here.
(I hope to do more non-bandcamp releases soon.)

July 30th, 2021 - ☆♀☆♀STAR GIRL☆♀☆♀ - !!!自己死 !!!
Year: 2015
Label: Aloe City Records
Genre: Plunderphonics, noise

(I promise this is the last 2047 side project I post here ever, so sorry for repeating myself but there's just a lot of good
stuff buried in their disccography that I want to get out of my head before moving on.) On the surface, STARGIRL can be
called kind of lazy, basically just slowing down and distorting songs (mostly Porter Robison,) but maybe it's just me but there's
so much more that simple change does. The same way Chuck Person and other early vaporwave artists used minimal editing for maximum
effect, !!自己死 !!!takes sweet electronic songs and blasts them into brickwalled distortion that makes them feel orders
of magnitude more crushing and defeated. There's a bittersweet (probably the best word to describe the project) feeling of
of nostalgia and emotional overload that's hard to find much of anywhere else in this style. (STARGIRL also helped to change the way
I looked at noise, plunderphonics, and my own production.)

July 29th, 2021 - Hara-Kari Kitty - 32-Bit Vampire Rainbow Necking
Year: 2004
Label: Brokecore
Genre: Digigrind

And now for something completely different!
I have a thing for footage of 2000s parties, experimental music by kids / teens, and weird early interet shit and I'm happy
to bring in all three in one. Hara Kari Kitty is an amateur, silly, passionate mess of video game sounds, chiptunes, blasting
gabber kicks, and crazy screaming. While this might sound familiar to people into cybergrind, HKK has a very unique way
of doing it, and was one of, if not the, first. In the early days it seems to just have been Brokecore, Adam Cooley, HKK,
Bubblegum Octopus, and one or two others that formed an incredibly internet-based, nerdy, and idiosyncratic sound. Just
look at the cover - it's a proto-lolcat circa '04, and there's some excellent footage of his shows. I wonder what HKK's up
to these days. (I'd recommend reading the recap of his digigrind career on his discography album, helps sheds some light.)

July 28th, 2021 - sky 空 -countryside 田舎
Year: 2015
Label: None
Genre: Ambient

Another one of Lyndon (暗い自然)'s project, sky 空 combined looping, drony pieces that could go on for an hour
or more with shorter tracks with more vaporwave-ish melodies. countryside 田 is neither, really - a windchime
orbiting around about the same melody for 20 minutes. It sounds minimalistic and could be boring in the wrong hands but
here it's perfect. It just sounds so absolutely pure and pretty that it can't really have anything to do with real
life. It's an ideal soundtrack for idealistic daydreaming, preferable at unhealthily high altitudes (laying face down
in bed will also do.) Despite being one of my favorite ambient tracks, it was deleted with the rest of the bandcamp page,
which luckily was on archive.org and the mega.nz backup links were still online. (Also, I believe he was 15 when he did this,
which is also quite cool. It reminds me of Satoshi Ashikawa's Still Way.)

July 27th, 2021 - Lolicoin - LOLICOIN GAIDEN (BANNED FROM LOLICORE)
Year: 2020
Label: None
Genre: Lolicore

(This was a last minute choice but whatever.) Lolicoin as a whole is recommended, but I decided to showcase
a release that wasn't a behemoth like some of his other stuff and was more of an EP with higher quality overall.
BANNED FROM LOLICORE is a fun little collection of hardcore / speedcore tunes with an interesting variety of how
those elements were used, in addition to a random mashup of a track ("ripping off japshitfun") and an odd glitchy
crushed trap remix ("pressure.") It's ostensibly coated in memes and some edginess like the rest of Lolicoin's stuff,
but still does what it does well. Headbanging internet rave music to disappoint your parents to.

July 26th, 2021 - Azuse - Osaka
Year: 2018
Genre: Ambient, lobit

This release is 750 kilobytes (I have text files bigger than that) but the lobit, 8kbps nature of it doesn't
hold it back, nor does the fact it kind of looks like a joke. It's one of my favorite ambient albums -
just conjures up images of computers running in some frozen bunker somewhere, endless snowstorms, and
an aimless existence hiding alone from a nuclear winter, without the overt edginess and cliches of dark
ambient (which this isn't.) Maybe I'm reading too much into it considering it's actually themed around
Osaka but it's very evocative and enjoyable ambient nevertheless. "untitled 1" is my personal favorite,
and while I was gonna say it deserves more than to sit hidden away in some tiny corner of an obscure
dead label on archive.org, it wouldn't feel right for it to be anything else.

July 25th, 2021 - Favorite 水 / Tina Dartrix - The Basket Catchers
Year: 2019
Label: None
Genre: Post-nightcore

I knew I wanted to do Favorite 水 but didn't know which I wanted to include, but upon relistening to
the Tina Dartrix side I realized this was the one. Post-nightcore is a weird genre plagued by memeiness
and inaccessibility but this split really captures it's potential. Favorite 水 provides tracks whose
samples have no business being given the nightcore treatment (4 and 6) and a more conventional but absurdly
happy and catchy track (5,) and Tina's side is sleepy, vague, and hypnogogic. Weird that a nightcore artist
would capture what most vaporwave artists chase but never really achieve. My favorite is the aptly titled
"sleep" (I listened to it on loop when half awake for hours sick in the ICU once,) but the whole thing is
well worth your time.

July 24th, 2021 - Portable Document Format - stop kissing in the middle of the hallway
Year: 2019
Label: None
Genre: Emo, lofi, ambient

Emo is often parodied (and probably for good reason) but it has a lot of good aspects, all of which are
embodied in a little bundle here. It is intensely angsty, teenaged, and amateur, with very pretty lofi
melodies, teenage poetry lyrics, and surprisingly varied styles. Spoken word over ambient, acoustic emo
songs, and distorted almost manic tracks. It's seemingly the artist's (later known as willow for bedroom
punk, h3artcrush for scenecore, and luvwillow☆ currently) first release and it shows but in a wonderful
way. It's not angry but instead drowning in self pity and ruminating and is an ideal soundtrack to a
lonely high school existence.

July 23th, 2021 - 暗い自然 - 氷床 Earth
Year: 2016
Label: BLCR Laboratories
Genre: Ambient, deathdream

I argued with myself a bit about what to put for today because I had so many ideas, but there'll be time enough
for them all eventually, so I settled on an extremely underrated ambient release. Spawned from the prolific
2047 부드러운 아픈 and microgenre deathdream (a subset of ambient vaporwave, it seems,) it was nuked with most
of their discography following a copyright controversy. I might post more rarer releases from Lyndon because
they have a beautiful balance of melody and ambient drone. The songs definitely move but at a glacial pace,
a balance most ambient music misses. 氷床 Earth sounds exactly how it looks - cold, blurry, weary, a soundtrack
to a lonely life in a nuclear winter. It feels like living and dying in Siberia or a shut-in slowly giving up
hope. I listened to it for days on loop when I was sick and reading Girl's Last Tour.

July 22th, 2021 - raccoon king - flowers (demos and covers)
Year: 2021
Label: None
Genre: Bedroom punk

I have mixed feelings about the weird scene stuff emerging from Soundcloud but this is some of the best that
community has to offer. Nightcored, autotuned vocals with edgy lyrics about being terminally online and hating
yourself set to fantastic high energy lofi punk guitar instrumentals. There's some acoustic songs, some really
short high octane songs, some instrumentals, and whatnot. He was also kind enough to put lyrics with it too, a
welcome change from the normally unclear lyrics in that genre. It begins with a sample from a school shooter
interrogation, which just about sets the stage for what's to come.
Check it out here. As far as I'm aware it's not officially up for download anywhere, but I took the liberty of
ripping it, adding metadata, and uploading it here for the offline player of your choice.

July 21th, 2021 - KUSOWANK x Ninja McTits – いもうとメイド
Year: 2015
Label: Tsundere Violence
Genre: Noise, lolicore

Jeez, almost forgot today. Anyway, here's one of my favorite noise releases. KUSOWANK's side (a CDR alias, too)
is some unique short noise tracks using Kyary Pamyu Pamyu samples, drum loops, gore vocals, sweet glitchy sounds,
like the most extreme of Hikaru's kusoikore experiments without their "conventional" basis. The Ninja McTits side
really shines in my opinion and is the biggest influence on my noise music experiments. It's smashed together samples
from god knows where - OSTs, rock, breakcore, shards of McTit's music library - pasted together with noise blasts and
saved at +30 decibels or something. It's all jump cuts and sudden changes and I would love to see a sample listing for
it one day but that'll never happen.

July 20th, 2021 - sorryman / torrent my pets - white room
Year: 2018
Label: None
Genre: Deep internet

Deep internet is a micromovement that spawned from /mu/ and Bandcamp that used samples from YouTube videos with
virtually no views. In practice, this led to elements of ambient, vaporwave, field recordings, spoken word,
and sound collage. This is my favorite release in the scene as a whole - it combines genuinely beautiful slowed
drone slush with personal clips of stranger's lives into a varied whole. The album feels like being half-awake
and barely paying attention to the world around you. I listened to it once when alone several floors beneath
a college campus.

Genre: Mostly noise and experimental

There have been innumerable compilations themed around short tracks - 13 seconds, 5 seconds, 3 seconds,
and many one-second compilations, cramming as much distinct sound into as little time as possible. I wanted
to start off this project with one of them, and the one that stood out most was this. It's scale is unheard
of for releases of this type: 1740 songs, 1740 artists, 29 minutes, and I was surprised when going through the
tracklist and running into artists I recognized almost every minute, including many prominent artists of the
2000s netlabel / digigrind / noise scene. This has more views than most of what I'll post here, but it deserves far more.
