DEPTHS OF THE NET is an perpetual work-in-progress project
with the intention of posting obscure music every day from all over the musical
sphere that I encounter on my endless safari through the wide world of web,
for two years and counting!
If you own any of this and want me to change or remove it I gladly will,
and though might take me a while to get to them suggestions are also appreciated. And now for something completely different!
December 30th, 2021 - The Draculas - Lies Year: ????
Label: None?
Genre: Lofi, synthpop
James Ferraro is well known in his kind of music circles, but this track
somehow slipped through the cracks and languished in undeserved obscurity.
Seemingly dredged up (by a musician formerly posted on here) from a broken
website, it's on par with the best of his work.

The best thing I can compare it to is Japshitfun-esque samplecore stuff,

December 26th, 2021 - Lil Grind$aw - SUICIDE PART X: Gloom Year: 2017
Label: None
Genre: HNW, ambient
Lil Grind$aw (this post refers more to the artist than the release itself,)
instead of making hour-long monoliths that sound more or less the same, has
shorter walls just long enough to get the point across, uses a lot more careful
sound designing, and oftentimes works in looping samples on top of the crackles
and rumbles. If you're good with the edgy subject matter, it's as good as an
introduction to the genre as you can get.
Download it here.
I am well aware this is a meme album but intentionally or not it came out pretty
interesting. Even with the same sample in every track but one, it manages to stay
diverse in sound, and you can appreciate the edits and production if you know the
song as well as you no doubt know this one. A fun little bit of self-described
broporwave.
Download it here.
One of my favorite HNW records of all time, eschewing the genre's usual
gore / edginess as well as it's counterculture "happier" side (see Love
Katy and such projects) in favor of beautiful melancholic pianos dueting
with it's static monoliths. I heavily encourage you to read the description,
too. It really does feel like bleakness and repetition and peaceful hopelessness
under anime sakura.
Download it here.
A now-deleted youtube upload from a now-lost album. Indulgent in all
of the genre's cliches (see the Blingee on the cover) but that works
to it's benefit. (Also see the larsht_ remix that I'm partially to blame for.)
Download it here.
A collection of cool midwest emo tunes, distorted into an absolute brick wall
of a waveform and released exclusively via a download link in a Twitch chat music
festival. Maybe it's just me but the idea works way better than it has any right to.

December 21st, 2021 - ロンリーファゲット - self-cry. You are a lonely piece of shit Year: 2017
Label: Tsundere Violence
Genre: Lofi rock, ambient
This artist seemingly released a flurry of singles under various aliases on Tsundere Violence then
vanished, as far as I can tell. Most are vocaloid or noise-related, but there's some post-rock,
including this. It feels like a teaser for something that regrettably never came out.
Download it here.
Warped ultimate lofi emo music. Some parts are messed with and reversed,
others ascend into noise, and there's some very pretty acoustic melodies
and lyrics. The only context for this I know is that it's a project
of Quinn Glaspey / dissociative youth, who apparently died around a
month after this release, which makes it a bit more haunting than it already was.

An old Lapfox album gets attacked and torn to shreds by Dagro here, leaving enough of the original to

Genre: Mutant punk
This is not the actual cover but I couldn't find one and I like this image
I highly encourage you to read more about mutant punk here, but
in short, it was a brief, out of control music / subculture scene in San Diego at the turn of the
millenium that merged (cyber)punk, electronics, and the concept of culture hurtling towards some
collapse that can't come soon enough. It sounds exactly like that, even in this early unpolished demo (sampled and
popularized by Nero's Day at Disneyland, which shared a member with Beautiful Mutants.) They formally
and almost respectfully declared literal war on God and associated deities, accusing Him of terrorism.

For some context: all of the artists here are the same person, most commonly called Pkthundaga.
From what I've been able to figure out, this was made with the assistance of his own homemade DAW

Part of seemingly a trilogy of Unreleased/Unreleasable albums, it throws together a very '05 collection of movie and music

I cannot for the life of me choose a release to post in specific so enjoy the label in it's entirety.
Летпав has less to do with labels the way most people think of it and more to do with net art, ephemera,
in-jokes, and (sometimes literal) poles of musical inaccessibility. Inbetween normal noise / HNW / plunderphonics
albums, you've got Л0429 (the same 6 second track, over and over, for seeming the sole purpose of having
titles,) Л0050 (pictures of an unhinged sounding notebook,)
Л0450 (almost a gigabyte of pictures from a trip,) Л0077 (?????)
and any kind of strange spur of the moment experiment the circle of artists behind this mess decided on.
Moreover, it seems almost completely unknown outside it's participants.

Stoner rock in the most literal way, Free Weed provides some ultra-lofi
and surprisingly catchy tracks, infused with fuzzy guitar, wonky synths
every now and again, and a comfy warmth. Essentially the audio equivalent
of a worn drug rug sweatshirt.

While not (in my mind) the perfect execution of the idea, CRT麻痺 tribute
to frigid wastelands and desolate snowy landscapes succeeds in capturing
the peace in the cold between fragile piano samples, usual vaporwave
selections, and the omnipresent radio fuzz threatening to bury the signal.
I prefer 暗い自然's 氷床 Earth to soundtrack snowed-in nights but this might
be more up some people's alley.

November 6th, 2021 - Various Users - HKSC Covers 2009-2016 Year: 2021(ish)
Label: None
Genre: Acoustic midigrind
Forget good music today, time for something stupid. This is a bootleg I compiled of the remains of
a mostly-forgotten old-school youtube trend of covering covers of covers of the infamous Hello
Kitty Suicide Club. In the interest of digital archiving I saved the videos, and decided to compile
this wreck out of them. Enjoy at your own risk.

November 5th, 2021 - Ogbert the Nerd - EP Year: 2019
Label: None
Genre: Emo
A bit of a bigger band than I intended to post here but it's seriously good,
a little bundle of punkish tunes, confessional lyrics, merging emo angst and
spikes of optimism. Interesting enough, it seemed to have tied to the earlier
OK Friends posted on here a while back. Ogbert seems to have risen from OK's
ashes, at least that I can make out.

November 4th, 2021 - Tsubaki Yeah! - Life Is Good Year: 2012
Label: Tsundere Violence
Genre: Trance, chiptune, DnB
A pair of addictive tracks, packed with chiptunes, virtual guitars, and breakbeats,
waxing nostalgic in the B-side and uplifting (true to it's title) on the main song.
Virtually everything from this artist seems to have been nuked too - even this release
got deleted from it's label. A forgotten bit of net history that deserves to be raved to by someone.

November 3rd, 2021 - Parasitic Humanoid Volleyball Club - Nowheresville Year: 2020
Label: None
Genre: Emo, lofi
Instrumental acoustic emo meanderings, tinged with clipping from bad mics and the hum of home recording
but all the more sentimental and solemn for it, like an emo / post-rock hybrid from a cold bedroom in
nowhere, Canada.

November 2nd, 2021 - cave- Abortion Year: 2019
Label: None
Genre: Punk
Far edgier than my normal postings but the point is to bring a variety, and here it is. Wild untamed
probably literal garage punk that brings out unintellibable lyrics, some unconventional sounds and structures,
and plenty of angry tunes to browse the web and / or violate traffic laws to.

October 30th, 2021 - Cory Strand - Wisher Year: 2021
Label: Infernal Noumena Productions
Genre: Dark ambient
Another release put here mostly to highlight the label / artist, not that there's anything wrong
with this dark ambient behemoth itself, as bleak and blurry as the cover would suggest. What makes
this label's output unique is the flood of releases that reinterpret metal music into drone. I don't
know what the process entails but by Cory Strand's hand everything from Def Leppard to 90s black metal
demos get transuted into ambient monoliths.

October 30th, 2021 - CDR - Synth Works 17 Year: 2017
Label: None
Genre: Ambient, BGM
CDR is best know for his breakcore works but he's no stranger to noise, techno, and among many other things, ambient.
Sounds like a perfect soundtrack to a nonexistent video game. Reminds me of Seifuku Sound if you know them, or
or IDM minus the breakbeats and chaos.

October 26nd, Steve Roden - Winter Couplet Year: 2002
Label: New Platic Music
Genre: Ambient, lowercase
Almost twenty years ago two tea cups, eight speakers, and a bunch of cardboard tubes were assembled into an instrument
of sorts and it made a sweet medley of twinkling sounds like little windchimes. As simple as it can get but more than enough
Download it here.
Vaporwave seemed about as played out a genre as it can get for a while and I got out of it before I discovered signalwave.
This is the prime example: often massive albums, minimally edited (more of collected or catalogued than anything) of slice
of life transmissions that seem to come from another, simpler universe. The vague VHS covers and abstract titles lend even
more to making it feel transient, otherworldly, but right at home.

October 22nd, 2021 - Unknown Artist - Untitled Year: Unknown
Label: None
Genre: Lofi
I was going through a community yard sale and found a bunch of microcassettes. This is the one that was still in the player.
No idea who, no information or writing, and the others has some stuff on them too. It seems to be some teenager practicing guitar,
and I can't imagine this was supposed to be heard by anyone but him, which makes it all the more interesting that it surfaced.
Download it here.
The release here is basically arbitrary as I really want to showcase the project as a whole.
In my opinion, HNW is best when it revolves around a monolithic obsession (some projects like this
are shown off here) and the aesthetic of this one is perfect. This is just opinion, but HNW is weak
when it's just random edgy topics but ideal when it's wallishness is not just limited to sound.

October 20th, 2021 - memory twin - dead flowers for a friend Year: 2017
Label: None
Genre: Ambient, lofi
An associated project to the previously posted "hospital flowers," memory twin is a mixture of lofi bedroom pop staples
and weird experimentation. Abstract guitar meandering, short keyboard ambients, and warped tape manipulations mix into
something that works perfectly with the collection of photos that comes with the download, which I encourage you do.
You can almost feel the old tired house around you. Amatuerish but in the best way. I sound like a broken record.

October 18th, 2021 - pulp finish - i cant get away w/ jinx Year: 2018 or 2019?
Label: None
Genre: Emo rap
I'm normally less than a fan of this kind of music but if any song does it well it's probably this one. The guitar instrumental is
lovely, it doesn't have any trap snares, and keeps the tempo down while still being rap. There's three vocal parts (although one's
probably from the sample) and the lyrics, while angsty, are put together enought to get away with it. Generally, it nails what's
good about emo rap while avoiding (at least what I think are) it's annoying aspects. Additionally, it seems pulp finish purged just
about his entire online presence in 2019, including this, and it feels odd that I might've been the only one listening to it for that long.

October 17th, 2021 - girls in the eighties - TEENAGE ROYALTY Year: 2012
Label: Ailanthus Recordings
Genre: Pop punk?
I'm neglecting this site like crazy, so sorry. I intend to be more on top of things now. Anyway, girls in the eighties!
About time I get something happier on here, and here it is, a weirdly underrated pop punk / garage rock album, nested inexplicably
between vaporwave releases on a vaporwave label, which is oddly fitting, as it belongs to an alternate, idealized world much the same
way vaporwave does. Teenage Royalty is straight out of a pocket universe created exclusively from parties in generic suburbia, MTV,
and 00s teen movies. The cover just about tells it all.

October 9th, 2021 - Kiki - Scary Spirits & Nice Ghosts Year: 2021
Label: None
Genre: Folk
Kiki kind of got known for his rock music but his folk tracks are even better. I'm not sure
what to put here because it doesn't really need an introduction but I love it's odd, kind of awkward
but super sweet songwriting, how it's personal and eccentric but still very open, and feels innocent
in a way that really benefits it. There's a song about dying ane becoming a guardian angel for someone you
love, for example, and spooky references throughout. Blasting this all Halloween season.

October 9th, 2021 - axtrmnt - old garbage Year: 2020
Label: None
Genre: Depressive breakcore
For a page with the slogal "Now for something completely different," I seem to love
posting the same stuff again and again. That being said, axtrmnt is seriously underrated,
probably due to his brief online presence. This album is largely in tribute to Waqs, and
further explores the melancholic breakcore sound while pulling no punches with it's subject
matter. Bleak but beautiful.

October 8th, 2021 - Nabokov's Super Slumber Party - Carpet Skyscrapers Year: 2014
Label: None
Genre: Speedcore, breakcore, ambient
Nabokov's Super Slumber Party sold themselves short with this one. Minimal cover, no label,
randomly deleted from Bandcamp, and yet it's probably their best work. From isolated vocals chopping over
speedcore, a Crystal Castles remix, IDMy synth ambient, and an original hardcore chiptune work, it really
shows what they're really capable of, out of basically nowhere, right before they disappeared for years.
Talk about a swan song.
October 8nd, 2021 - 3 little kittens - Meowing and Purring Year: 2020
Label: None
Genre: Comfy synth
I know comfy synth has become something of a meme but there's still some gems buried in
the bandwagon, this being one of them in my opinion. It has the genre's cheer and idealism
but leans minimal to the part of being sparse. "found a bag" is even a bit eerie and random
and I wouldn't be surprised if some actual cat-walking-across-a-keyboard made it's way into
the album. I can't really imagine an album being more fitting to being made by kittens.

Making up for missing September 17th.
Last Tsundere Violence release I'll post, I promise, but it's a great example of noisy lolicore and what
you can push with the genre. Here, RS36 puts the genre's shock value aside and replaces it with a part-happy
part-longing (and still ear-blasting) sentimental feeling not unlike Maedasalt. It's a fun release that probably
isn't for everyone but if it's for you it'll be perfect. Feels like a strange kind of love song.

October 8th - Wounding of the Bright - Mechanical Blooms Year: 2018
Label: None
Genre: Ambient?
Since I was lucky enough to get a CD of theirs at an art show a few years back, I've been meaning
to write about WotB for a while. They're essentially ambient, but in quite a different way than most
ambient is. I don't know much about the band but their influences seem to be more personalized than the
way Bandcamp ambient tends to copy off of itself, and so it ends up mixing occassional percussion, electronics,
guitar, warm and dark drones, and field recordings (sourced from the mechanical art of the artist on the cover.)
"oubliette shadow" even reminded me a bit of witch house. A reminder why it's good to get involved in your local
art scene.

October 2nd, 2021 - Skreensabers - 7 Brothers (Outside Steppers Session Vol. 0) Year: 2004
Label: RDC Records
Genre: Experimental hip hop
Here's one-off at the far back of CDR's huge discography that was luckily recovered a while back.
If you've ever wondered what seven teenagers goofing off and making improvised accapella rap at
2 AM in 2004 sounded like, here you go. I wish I could understand it but it speaks for itself anyway,
random breaks into Star Wars theme music and all. It could be nostalgic if you've done cool stupid
stuff like this with your friends in the past.
